DENTISTRY Paper XVII
General description
The course in dentistry is designed to prepare students to understand the principles and practice of dentistry.
General Objectives
Students will be able to
- apply the knowledge and skill gained to common dental problems such as simple extractions and treatment of common inflammatory diseases of oral cavity.
- give oral health education for the maintenance of oral hygiene in community and schools.
- carry out actual extraction procedures and other simple treatments which enable them to gain practical skills in OPD.
Specific Objective
Students will be able to
- recall normal anatomy of teeth, mandible and maxilla.
- describe the anatomy and histology of teeth, gingiva, oral mucous membrane and periodontium;
- describe the nerve supply, arterial supply and venous drainage of upper and lower jaws;
- explain the aetiology, pathophysiology, classification, clinical features and management of :
- Dental plague and dental calculus
- Gingivitis, periodontitis and pericornitis
- Dental caries
- Pulpitis and pulp abscess
- White lesions of oral cavity
- Fractures of maxilla and mandible
- Common cysts and oral tumors
- state indications and contraindications of extraction of teeth; explain the post extraction instructions;
- list common teeth injuries and explain their management;
- explain the importance of oral hygiene care and brushing techniques;
- list the diseases of tempro-mandibular joint and state the line of management of dislocation of TMJ.
Practical dentistry
Students will be able to
- perform local anaesthesia required for extraction of teeth;
- carry out simple extraction procedures;
- drain simple dental abscesses;
- diagnose, manage and refer the following conditions (when necessary)
- gingivitis, pulpitis, dental abscess, pericoronitis, epulis, dental cysts, factures of mandible and maxilla, and white lesions of oral cavity.
Preventive Dentistry
Students will be able to
- plan and implement school health programme in oral hygiene
