DEFINITION
Atelectasis refers to the state of either incomplete expansion of lungs or collapse of previously inflated lungs, producucing areas of relatively airless pulmonary parenchyma.

Causes
Airway obstruction caused by
  1. Excessive secretion (e.g., mucus plugs)
  2. Exudates within smaller bronchi, as may occur in bronchial asthema, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and postoperative states.
  3. Aspiration of foreign substances
  4. Fragments of bronchial tumors
Accumulation of
  1. Fluid (transudate, exudate or blood)
  2. Tumor or
  3. Air (pneumothorax) within the pleural cavity
Focal or generalized pulmonary or pleural fibrosis prevents full lung expansion.
About
Due to complete obstruction, over time, air is resorbed from the dependent alveoli, which collapse.
The accumulated substance compress the lungs.
Fibrosis prevents the expansion of lungs.
Mediastinum shift
Due to diminished lung volume, mediastinum shifts towards lungs.
Due to pughing of lung, mediastinum shifts away from lungs.
